Girls Club Event / Role Models and Girl Love

The last Girls Club event was  at The Mess Hall on Sunday 1st September.

The Theme: Role Models and Girl LOVE!

This month we got together to talk about the women we admire and look to for inspiration from all over the public sphere. We talked musicians, actresses, businesswomen and politicians. Here are a few of the women that rated a mention (they all do but some got lost in the notes!)

  • Salt n Pepa and TLC – Girl Rap in the 90s was a huge influence for some of us. These ladies dedicated songs to the safe sex message, were vocal about AIDS awareness and Anti-Slut Shaming before slut shaming was a thing!
  • Kathleen Hanna – one of the founders of the Riot Grrrl movement. What isn’t there to say about this incredible woman? Check out The Punk Singer, it covers most of her activism from her early days of attending feminist rallies with her mother, right through her days in Bikini Kill, to her present musical project The Julie Ruin.
  • Anne Hathaway and Scarlett Johansson – These ladies don’t take any sass from the press, in fact they give it straight back! They encourage positive body image and play credible female roles. Check out some videos of the ladies in action:
  • Some great businesswomen: Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and creator of Lean In champions gender equality in the workplace; Marissa Mayer, the CEO and President of Yahoo!, for encouraging new mothers to return to work.
  • Natasha Stott Despoja and Sarah Hanson-Young, both have been the youngest women ever elected to Australian Parliament. A huge deal! Natasha is retired from politics now, however Sarah is doing great things for the Greens in her SA seat in the Senate.

Thank You

Massive thanks to Kat, Liesl, Cintia and Jude for coming along and sharing the Girl LOVE! It was a lovely and insightful time, as always.
